James Dean made this 1949 Mercury Eight Coupe the epitome of cool in the "Rebel Without a Cause". The original car still exists today in a California museum and this decades old DM model replicates it well. The '49 Merc with its split windscreen became the foundation for the lead sled custom hot rods to come. Nothing demonstrates the lead sled phenomenon like the Barris Brother's custom '49 built for Ken Hirohata which, with a few engine changes also exists today.
A black beauty. One of my favorite DM models in my collection.
I've seen this photographs of this green custom Mercury. Is it famous, and are certain custom body builders celebrated and sought after like coachbuilders? I know nothing of this world.
@charles-rockett In the world of lead sleds, the Hirohata Mercury is an icon.
Two of my Favorites. Loved the 49 Merc. Such Style and Grace.
