John, I’m curious about what Dum Dums are. I know of two types. First is a bullet scored to break into pieces when it makes contact; second, a child’s soother to help with teething. Is there a third? Great images as usual. Thanks!

David, Lollipops or suckers, usually with a softer center in them:

thank you for your question David....in the late 50`s,and possibly for a much longer period than just that, lazy folks sometimes just "phoned-in" the whole Halloween trick or treat business by placing a bowl of wrapped candy under the light on the covered porch....for several years that would suffice as a "contributory credit" as kids grew wise to these stashes of untended candy, word got passed around and that dastardly practice of "emptying the bowl" into your brown paper shopping bag was born (and flourished)
as a half step backwards from full adult responsibility, the couch people fired back with a "treat" so reviled that kids would turn their noses up at the offerings from as far as 9 steps out from the porch !!!!.....Individual packs of Sen_Sen !!!!!......after a couple seasons of not having the raiders darken their porches, some felt a little more magnanimous (guilty) to the point that they stepped up the game (offerings),but not by much!
Enter Dum Dums !!!!! ..... better than Sen-Sen (licorice soap) but not by a whole lot...a ball of hard candy on a paper stick....if you were one of those drooly kids, you might have experienced paper "lint" balls forming around the saliva softened paper, sometimes leading to complete failure of the stick ...rumors persisted in a certain Midwestern neighborhood that a nicely rounded-over basket of Dum-Dums had been sitting, untouched, long enough for ground squirrels to have raised children and for those children to have raised their own offspring in said basket.....a couple grape Dum Dums had gone missing in this span but the rest remained untouched
If you ever find yourself in a Dollar Store, look around near the floor level shelves...chances are there`ll be a dusty plastic sack with your name on it

We had them in Canada...they were called Tootsie Roll Pops as I recall.
