Cars of the 1960s...
1963 Studebaker Avanti
A '62?...
I thought they came out as a '63 model year, with round trim around the headlamps, not square. Any other opinions?
Saint Clair Shores, Michigan
Not a 62...
They started production in 1962 as a '63 model. And, yes, you're correct the '63 had round headlights bezels. Studebaker ended production in December of '63.
I believe that the original picture was of a late '64 Avanti.
Production stats make a distinction that early '64's had round headlight bezels and that there was a run of transitional models termed '63 1/2. The late run '64's had the rectangular bezel headlights as was pictured here. The first 30 '64's retained the original round bezel headlights.
My Error; Thanks For Pointing It Out. Now Corrected...
The original image was mislabeled, but I should have known better anyway. Sorry for any confusion.
I believe that is a '64 late model (original picture).
When I was a kid, I worked cleaning cars on Saturdays at the local Arco station (or was it still Atlantic Richfield?). One of the customers had his R3 washed every Saturday - SWEET! It had the nicest sounding set of pipes...
Ed by square headlights don't you mean the "opening" not the ...
actual headlight? I've never heard square headlamps in the 60's. As far as I know GM started using them around 1975, then most all others followed and by late 70's most all cars had some type of retangular (or square if you will), headlamp bulb.
Here's The Original Pic...
Note round lenses in square bezel...
YEAH!!!!!!!! those are the lights I remember seeing as a kid! : )
Thanks for bringing back a little nostalgia! I actually was very very intrigued by the Avanti IIs when I was growing up. I always thought that they were really neat looking, and kind of futuristic at the same time. The silver one particularly looked nice to me. Here's a trivia question (of which I haven't a clue).... What was the body of these cars made of? I just thought about it, and I dont EVER recall seeing a drop of rust on any of them!
Fiberglass doesn't rust.
Ahh HAaaaa! I knew there was a "trick" to that! LOL
I figured they were either alluminum or fiberglass. Thanks for the info.
Nice car....
I would think, though, the owner could spend five dollars and replace those beat up license plates.
Round were 1963 and square were 1964 and Avanti II
But in keeping with Studebaker's anouncement that they were not going to have model years , but make ongoing changes to impove the cars " not wait for a model year, a few 1963 late in the model year had the square headlight cover.
