Of the cars I never appreciated as a kid, this 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster was definitely at the top of the list. If it wasn't a high horsepower, large displacement V8, who the hell would want this thing? I never considered winding roads, it was always what could the car do in a straight line with braking ability more of an afterthought. What was James Dean's obsession with this glorified Volkswagen? Well as the years rolled on I began to begrudgingly give this Speedster some respect for what it represented in its day. I ignored this FM model when it was first released in red in 1995. By 2004, I was ready to include this anniversary LE of 2500 in my collection for its historical importance. Due to the 30 year old age of the original, it is a bit crude by later standards, but , fortunately, the black finish is really nice without any orange peel. The scripts and badging are tampo'd but show up well against the black finish. My only question on the model is how come FM didn't spring for the optional Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio?
Not a bad looking model for the era. I got to drive the 356 owned by a high school friend back on 1958. It certainly did not feel slow at the time.
readily recall the red version coming out and did not buy, although I wanted one, because of, IMHO, the too small headlights. great pics as always Rich
