Beautiful color combo. DM certainly got the max out of that tooling with all the variants/repaints.

Love the color combination along with the two tone green. Mercuries have been a favorite of mine for practically a life time. When I was sixteen in 1956 I bought a 1950 coupe for $600 and for the following four years proceeded to pour every cent I made at my various jobs into customizing the car.

OK, let me guess: a foxtail on the antenna, fuzzy dice from the rearview mirror, pom poms over the rear window and 'baby moon' hubcaps. Anything else?

Well Rich you got the fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror correct. My modifications were quite a bit more extensive which included:

Shaved door handles.

Shaved hood and deck lid.

Frenched in headlights.

Rounded off hood corners.

Frenched in 52 Buick tail lights.

Gas filler door filled in and the filler pipe moved inside the trunk.

Full length lake pipes.

144 louvers cut in the hood.

1954 Chevrolet grill and parking lights with extra vertical teeth installed.

In 1958 I installed a 371 cubic inch Oldsmobile J2 engine and hydramatic transmission.

1955 Buick Roadmaster electric front seat.

The '49 Mercury's have been a favorite of mine as well since was about 5 years old.  My uncle Harlan was a Race Car Driver and his fastest car was a '49 Merc.  I was always in awe at the wall of trophies he had from his racing days.  Aside from this, I think the car was styled so much better than any competitor from the Big Three.

Sounds like a true '50s custom. Any pics?

John, I sold the car when I went into the Navy and over the years what pictures I had have been lost. The only picture I have is a polaroid but it is extremely fuzzy. The car was truly a fifties custom as all of the things I did to the car were ideas out of magazines such as Rod an Custom. I should add that the car did have spun aluminum disc wheel covers.

@bob-jackman WOW!!!  I don't suppose you still have pictures. My customizations never got past Bondo and rattle cans. Between work and school, I barely had time for the constant maintenance those old cars needed. I never even got to fix the leaking rear main seal on the 358 Lincoln engine that was transplanted in my Merc. I just kept a supply of 5 gallon cans of recycled motor oil. LOL

OOPS! Sorry, I didn't read your post just above. You can ignore most of this.

Wow....that is one heck of a lot of work!  Did you keep any pictures of it?  Whoops...disregard...just saw your answer.
