1952 started out with a bang for the new Mercedes-Benz 300SL "Gullwing" W194 with wins at Berne, Le Mans and Nurburgring with their recently ramped up 180ho 3.0 liter 6. The real "bang" came on one of the legs of the Third Mexican Carrera Panamericana when at,120mph, a buzzard smashed through the windshield and knocked co-driver Hans Klenk out cold with a deep gash on his forehead. The driver, Karl Kling, managed to shake Klenk awake and Klenk told him to keep driving. They still came in third on that leg and had the windscreen replaced with 8 metal bars screwed in to prevent any further collisions. The team won the event with a second 300SL right behind them. This #4 car now resides in the mercedes-Benz Museum.
I absolutely HATE it when that happens!
GREAT shots Rich!
Great post and images. I think that Klerk had a lucky escape on that one. He could have been blinded or worse. A magnificent car for the times.
Beautiful model and pictures, and great backstory. Thanks Rich!
