All 6,000 plus models are on display. My 1/18 scale are displayed in my finished garage while the others are in the house. I have a very understanding wife who actually likes my little cars and I like her miniatures so it works out well.

Good to hear Bob.  Though I can't boast of over 6,000 models as you can, I can share that I have a very understanding wife as well.  She let's me indulge in my hobbies and I let her do the same with hers.  The result, 49 years (in two weeks) of being happily married together.  We are very blessed and lucky dudes Bob.  Smile

Interesting question, George. I'd say I have about 1/4 of my collection stored in their boxes (the rest out on display). I still get enjoyment from those, too, in the way of "pride of ownership".

The question is still, why have them if they're not displayed?  Sorry, I just can't get past that.  My buddy who has all of his 600+ models in their boxes in a closet must stymies me.  When he wants to show one of them, he disappears for 15 or 20 minutes to find the car he wants.  He has to move boxes to get to "the one" he wants.  I don't get it!  But as they say, "To each their own".  Amazed

I thought I explained myself by describing it as "pride of ownership". Even if it's not on display, I possess it and can take it out of the box and look at it any time I want to, or I can put it out on display by taking something else off the shelf and putting that one back in its box. That seems odd to you?

Well yes, it does seem odd to me, but that's just me.  If it works for you, that is all that matters.  As I said above, I think we all have pride of ownership of our collections.  I'm only saying that for me, I personally could not enjoy my models if they weren't all physically visible to me.  I'd not buy them if I was going to pile them in a closet.  Again, please understand, that's me.

@moe-parr I completely agree with you. i am not judgmental of big collections.

Some of us don't want or need to have everything displayed at the same time because we also have other interest subjects  as books, art collecting, sculptures, and paintings.

Before I retired, we had a pretty large home where my wife had her own and private sizable space to enjoy her hobbies being a published author, painter and sculptor. I would call it a "balance" household displaying of interests with the main goal of not making our home cluttered with one's other hobby.

I was also a bit tacky not to be overwhelmed by each other hobbies displays because my career was in design and architecture and I was always willing to keep a clean  controlled balance of what was going on in our living environment.

I never displayed more than 50 models in my home office in a custom lighted dust free cabinet. The other display was in the family room for about the same. I believe I had about 200 in storage at anytime with less interest to be on displayed and getting them out the boxes.

Now, I am just happy displaying about 30 models I like the most.

I like the way you state your viewpoint.  With regard to your opening sentence, "I am not judgmental of big collections", I will simply add, neither am I.  But we are entitled to our viewpoints.

I had most of my collection in boxes in a closet for years as I had no space to put them.  When my 2 oldest kids took jobs away from the home and moved out, I turned one bedroom into my office/collection room.  Now all my cars are displayed including all the models that I build.  Finally able to enjoy them.

Your last sentence, "Finally able to enjoy them", proves my point.  The joy of owning and collecting these little cars, is being able to look at them.

for many years only about 80% of my collection was on display. Then about 12 months ago I converted a disused bedroom into my car room, ordering specially made wall display cases and floor showcases, so that my entire collection is now out and on display, and I love it! So good being able to look around the entire room and see model cars everywhere!

Glad you finally have ALL your cars displayed.  I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if mine were in boxes in a closet.  And now with all of yours displayed, I can totally understand the feeling you get when you walk in to the room and models surround you.  It's like heaven on earth.  Smile

yep its a great space George, I love it. Also I recently spent a bit of time re-arranging the models and there was not a spec of dust on any of them after having spent about 10 months on display. I still have one more case to go where I'll include a tiered shelf for my 1/43s. I must make an effort to take some really good (for me!) pics of the room. Perhaps some at night to show the effect of the lighted showcases.

FANTASTIC!  I am totally blown away with your displays.  Great job!  And when you walk in to that room, I know that you can feel a warm feeling go through  your body.  Exactly, why I will never understand why someone would have cars like these and have them in boxes tucked away in a closet.  It's just nutty!  THANK YOU for sharing your great collection!

Okay, this is a burning question of mine.

First some backstory.  I have a collector friend who has over 600 models in 1:24 and 1:18 scale.  He likes to brag about them and always eager to show a new arrival off.  BUT, he doesn't display them!  None of them!

He has them all in their respective boxes stacked in a bedroom closet.  He and I have had discussions about this, as I don't understand why he has them if they are not going to be displayed.  He says he doesn't have the room to display them, which I politely disagree as well.

He has two rooms in his house that could have shelves or display cases put in.  But he is relentless that the cars stay in their boxes tucked away in that closet.  I know they are not my cars, but it frustrates me.  I personally see NO REASON to buy them if they are not going to be displayed.

OKAY, SO THE BURNING QUESTION...

How many of you guys display your cars and how many of you don't.  If not, why?  And even better question, why even by them if you are not going to display them and enjoy looking at them?

First of all: Best wishes to everyone!!

Good question. I think it depends on so many factors. How big is your house, is there someone in the same house who likes them too? How many cars do you own? Do you see your cars as an investment or do you love to show them to the world. I have only about 275 models 1:24 and all displayed in 7 vitrines because i have one room for myself. I like to sit in the room surrounded by tbose cars. But if i had about 6000 models i wouldn't be able to show them all and would have to make a selection too. But then i would have to aks myself the question : is it still a hobby or an investment? Stocking 1000s of boxes on the attic and take a look at them once 10 years. Personally i like to see them every day and discover new things on every model. I like the way John Barry tells stories with the cars and Tony Perrone photographs them from every angle. I will try to limit it to 400-500. Then the room is full.
