A tale of two Ertl haulers. These are pressed steel large scale haulers. I have had the hauler in the first photo for over 30 years. The car on the trailer is mostly green. The second hauler with the mostly white car I just purchased. I have never seen this second one before. Photos of the first one are easy to find online with a quick search (google, ebay, facebook, etc) but I can’t find any info on the second one anywhere. Has anyone seen the second one before?

I’ll also add that all of the boxes I’ve seen for the common hauler have the image on the back of the box showing the predominantly white car on the trailer. That leads me to believe they intended to produce the one with the predominantly white car (1981 paint scheme) but maybe changed it when the 1982 race car paint scheme changed to more green. It makes me wonder if the trailer with the predominantly white car was a prototype or very low production. Any help or advice on where I can find more info on this is welcomed.

On a side note: the cab for the first one is not correct, only 2 axles. Not sure what happened to the original one but this is what I got with the trailer.

Although the info is limited, it sure is pointing towards this truck being a pre-production or prototype. The 1982 Ertl catalog shows this truck with the 1981 race car but no other physical examples anywhere. These Ertl catalogs for 1982 also show a 1/24 car and 1/43 car with the 1981 paint scheme. The 1/24 car was never released and the 1/43 car was produced with the 1982 paint scheme. I also believe the truck was only produced with the green 1982 race car on the trailer. This means that likely only 2-5 pre-production units were made with the white 1981 car on the trailer.

Here’s the catalog image. Notice the two trucks and trailers are different. The one the kid is playing with looks like the one I have with the proper cab. The other one in the background has only 1 rear axle on the truck the airfoil is missing on the roof of the cab and the artwork on the trailer is different (car is smaller). I believe that one was likely the first prototype.
