Fot The Man's Man of 1948... [PIC]

Picture a man mid-thirties smoking a pipe, wearing a floppy hat, red flannel shirt with hip waders carrying a shotgun accompanied by his faithful retriever. This is the image I get looking at the 1948 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman convertible. Powered by a 100 HP 239 cid flathead V8, this car was usually outfitted with all the amenities available including power window and convertible top and leather upholstery. Originally released in 1947, it wound down to only 29 units for a 1948 continuation making it very rare with few survivors. The wood body was built over a steel frame from Ford's Iron Mountain plant using dark mahogany plywood panels. The problem with all these woodies was the need to re-varnish the wood at least yearly to prevent rot. At about $2100, it was $500 more than a full steel bodied equivalent. This is really striking model by Danbury Mint finished in Maize Yellow.
