Being born in 1951, by the time I was 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 years old, it was normal to see cars of the late 1940's and early 1950's on streets all over my neighborhood.  Used cars were more in abundance at the time (at least from my young vantage point), and compared to the later fifties cars, all of those '40's and early '50's looked big and daunting to me.  I liked them!

One car that seemed to garner my attention early on was the so-called "Hatchback's" (that was what my Dad called them) were a fairly common sight.  A neighbor had a '49 Chevy and my Dad had a '49 Buick.  I remember the backseats being huge!  Of course I was just a little kid, but they were huge none the less.

When this brochure from DANBURY MINT for the 1948 BUICK ROADMASTER arrived in my mailbox, I had one of those little kid flashbacks.  I'd have never dreamed of having a model of one of these "Hatchbacks".  The color and presentation of the car on the brochure was vibrant and enticing.  I HAD TO HAVE IT!  And I can honestly say that as inviting as the brochure is, it doesn't do justice to the actual model.  The unique hood that opens from either side, the detailed engine, and even a spare tire in the trunk are little things that make this a perfect model.  The only thing that could have been added are the keys to take it for a spin.

The actual model is perfect in every way from my little kid memory of them.  This is a model that if I'd have passed on it, I'd be very angry with myself.  Sitting on my shelf, it represents my youth and offers up great memories of a time when cars were cool.

Now several years later, this model from Danbury Mint still gives me fun memory flashbacks of not only remembering the actual car as a kid, but also receiving the incredible model.  DM was at the height of their perfect replication and this model is an example of that.

I remember getting this model but after getting it I wasn't all that crazy about it. I ended up trading it. That's just me though.😊

I'm curious.  What didn't you like about it?

@georgeschire Don't get me wrong George, it is a beautiful model, it's generally earlier than I collect. Most of my models are mid 50's on up baring a few exceptions. 😊

Thanks, I understand.  My own collecting criteria was 1940 to 1970, with but a few exceptions.  It really depended on the model.  Happy collecting going forward Geno.

Shortly after birth in December of 1952, I rode home in my parents 1949 Oldsmobile 88 2 dr. Club Sedan. I don’t remember much about the ride home other than I was damp and it was really cold. I remember looking at photos of the car years later and asking my Dad questions about it. When I asked what color it was he said it was pretty much the same gray as in the b&w photo, and that it was the nicest riding car he had owned or ridden in. You really struck a cord with me when describing your memories George. Whenever I catch a glimpse of that Buick or the Chevy Aerosedan in my display it takes me right back to kiddom! Thanks for the cool post and keep them coming.
