This one I remember details.  I pulled in to the drive-way as the mail was just coming up to the house to deliver the mail for the day, so he handed me my mail to me.  A couple of the usual statements, a card from a local business, and the best part, from Danbury Mint of course!

Slicing open the envelope with anticipation as I'd always done and pulling out the small brochure, the words "The Limited Edition 1958 FORD THUNDERBIRD" right at the top of the page with a car that looked almost real.  At the bottom the words, "Special 50th Anniversary Edition!"

My initial thought was, damn can it be 50 years already?  I honestly as a kid never remembered seeing the original T-Bird two-seaters, but I do remember being in awe at the '58 model that was on the showroom floor of Peterson Ford on Concord Street behind our house.  They had the very first Edsel's on display too.

Paging through the six-leaf's of the brochure, there wasn't even the slightest doubt that I wasn't going to be on the phone in just minutes to order this one!  Being that this would be my first Thunderbird to add to my collection was exciting too.  This was always a favorite body-style of this iconic car, and my collection wouldn't be complete without out it, was all I could think of.

Today, thirteen years later, this Platinum Metallic and Raven Black beauty continues to bring a smile to my face when I see it on my shelf.  I also check it often because when I watch the old Perry Mason TV series, private detective Paul Drake is usually driving, you guessed it, a THUNDERBIRD!

FUN "REAL" THUNDERBIRD FACT: Ford ran 950,053 Thunderbirds off the assembly line for 1958.

Nice writeup George. You describing receiving mail from DM and FM sounds just like me...such excitement and anticipation. Believe it or not I still get a thrill when I receive notice of a desired model being made even though the notice is not done with such elegance.

DM did some nice Squarebirds.  I have the Tahitian Bronze '59 coupe and the Adriatic Green '60 convertible.

The excitement of getting the brochures and the "Cars of the Open Road" magazine were my favorite pieces of email to receive.  I always got a little tickle in my stomach when seeing them.  And then when the actual cars arrived, everything else I was doing or had planned was put on hold until the box was carefully opened, the car revealed, examined, and brought to a resting spot on my shelves.  I miss these precious moments.
