This highly customized Mercury Low Rider was found by local Gotham City officials following a confidential tip from Manny (The Man) Elsuego
Believed to be the coveted ride of Rico (White Shoes) Suave , the big Merc was parked on an elevated platform no more than 20 yards from what first appeared to be a road closure barrier, at the mouth of a huge cave system
Smelling strongly of bat guano, and outfitted with mostly obsolete crime fighting gear, the cave system is currently being searched by Commissioner (The Commish )Gordon’s finest detectives
More, as it comes in to us………..Stay tuned Citizen!
Responding to Manny Elsuego's tip about happening upon the abandoned customized Mercury of mob associate Rico "White Shoes" Suave at 9 p.m. while returning from a holiday upstate, detectives attended the scene at the remote caves and quickly searched the area but found no sign of him. A search of the purple Merc yielded only two items; a recent issue of "Spelunkers Monthly" magazine strategically placed on the driver's seat and a bloodied, well worn pair of size 10 cowboy boots locked in the trunk; which matched shoeprints coming from the caves back to the car. Becoming concerned, detectives interviewed Rico's girl friend Mitzi "Rockets" Delvecchio, who stated that her boyfriend had received a call around 7:30 in the evening which had resulted in him angrily slamming the phone down in its cradle and storming out of the house; saying he needed to quickly take care of business down at the old train station. Back at the scene Detective Harry Busch emerged from the first cave after a fruitless cursory search; stopping to wipe off his brogues, muttering "damned bat guano", under his breath. The seasoned Busch knew Rico Suave's profile well and the car evidence didn't wash. Rico's almost paranoid aversion to caves as the result of time spent in "The "Hole" during his last prison stretch was well known as was his penchant for tailored clothes and fine Italian white leather shoes....size 11. Busch then checked with the techies back at the station who advised that cell tower checks had yielded "pings" which, through triangulation, situated Elsuego's cell phone near Rico's home at 7:30; then just 18 minutes later very close to the shuttered train station and once again at 8:15 close to where custom Mercury was found. Busch decided it was time to grind on Elsuego and cut through the crap; the guy was dirty. He called him up and told him to meet at 5th. and Lincoln outside the old railway station. That should rattle him, Busch chuckled to himself as he dropped his Dodge Monaco into gear and sped off.

PART 2:
As Detective Harry Busch rolled up in his Dodge sedan through the darkened industrial park and approached the old railway station he saw the seedily dressed Manny Elsuego nervously pacing under a dim street light. "Get in Manny" he barked brusquely. The stocky Elsuego, feigning lightheartedness, quickly complied while discarding his cigarette and lighting up another. "Man, this guy is torqued to the max" mused Busch, seeing Elsuego's strained countenance and noting his inability to maintain eye contact. Busch went over Elsuego's report to police, had him confirm his alleged time line, direction of travel and location relative to his alleged return from upstate and his reporting the sighting of the custom Mercury. Busch then asked him what he would say if it could be proven his story wasn't true. As Elsuego listened then animatedly attempted to validate his story Busch noted that his nervousness increased and he fidgeted constantly; crossing his legs and shuffling his feet in and out of his floppy shoes on the car floor. He was sweating profusely and an increasingly foul smell emanated from his person. "This guy is worse than a crackhead....he looks like he could flip out any second" thought Busch worriedly; deciding to pause for a moment and back off a bit. Pretending to check his cell phone Busch turned on the interior light and turned his gaze back to Elsuego. Seeing his shoes clearly now, Busch suddenly realized that, although they were grimy, they were very high end white leather loafers and oversize. He felt an involuntary rush of adrenalin with this realization and as his senses became heightened he was shocked to realize that he now recognized the foul smell in the car....it wasn't body odor, it was bat guano on Rico Suave's stolen shoes! Too late Busch realized that Elsuego had seen his shocked realization and knew he was about to be arrested for mureder. He lashed out desperately, punching Busch hard in the jaw, which slammed his head against the door post. Busch, dazed and struggling to respond, watched as Elsuego leapt from the car, pulled a gun from his belt and sprinted away in the direction of the darkened industrial complex. Busch yelled for Elsuego to stop; whereupon he spun around and fired twice, striking the windshield, before fleeing into the darkness and out of sight. As Busch regained his faculties he radioed in for backup, fired up the Dodge and raced off in pursuit; angrily berating himself for causing this situation. After a short distance Busch came upon the discarded white loafers near the industrial park entrance road so decided to head inside and check the darkened area. Busch negotiated the narrow lanes as quickly as possible in the off chance he might flush out Elsuego. Turning into an unlit laneway Busch began to accelerate when suddenly a figure leapt from the shadows a short distance ahead. In the glare of his headlights Busch was horrified to see Elsuego raise his pistol, then the muzzle flashes and the sensation of pain as glass shards tore into his face. Instinctively Busch floored the Dodge then felt a dull thud shudder through the car as the windshield exploded inward. The Dodge carried on for a distance, bouncing off several walls, before Busch finally slammed on the brakes; throwing the badly injured Elsuego to the pavement. Busch drew his Glock, stepped out of the car and cautiously approached Elsuego, who was conscious but moaning in agony. Busch noticed that Elsuego had his hand outstretched, seemingly beckoning him forward. As sirens wailed in the distance Busch kneeled down and tried to reassure Elsuego that help was coming, but when their eyes met they both knew it was a lie. As his strength ebbed Elsuego managed a rueful laugh and haltingly murmured "Detective just two words describe the only reason you caught me and how I feel about it." Leaning closer Busch asked "What are the two words, Manny?" As his eyes flickered and closed Elsuego spoke his final words....."Bat shit."

THE END
EPILOG
After an exhaustive search the bullet riddled and guano covered body of mob associate Rico "White Shoes" Suave was located deep in the fourth cave searched by police. Forensic analysis linked the slugs from Suave's body to the gun used by Elsuego. Mitzi Delvecchio quickly identified the shoes worn by Elsuego as belonging to her boyfriend before inquiring whether police found his "flash roll" of cash on his person and his customized purple Mercury; both of which she laid claim to. She subsequently sold the Merc for a reported six figures to a collector named Jackman from Mississippi then disappeared with the money. The story persists however that she never even made it to the city limits because she "knew too much". Several informants advised police that Suave was "hit" for stealing drug money from the mob. After a short period of time spent healing from a fractured jaw and facial cuts, Detective Harry Busch was summoned to the office of Commissioner Gordon. Busch expected to receive a commendation but was shocked and angered when the image conscious and politically ambitious Gordon berated him for his handling of the suspect and his "cowboy tactics." This proved to be the final straw for the street wise and well respected Busch; who was under daily pressure to retire from his beloved but frantic wife Lotta. His decision was reinforced the following day when he received a phone call from Mr. Reid Page, a representative of Big Spine Publications; offering a very lucrative contract to have his legendary cases documented by a ghost writer and published as a series. Harry and Lotta Busch now reside comfortably in Tampa, Florida and enjoy a well deserved retirement.
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "Bob" ........if that really is your name 🤔 .................
