While I respected the '64 GTO package on the Tempest for putting a big block 389 in an intermediate body, I didn't care for its looks was the tacked on faux hood scoops. But the '65 was an absolute stunner for me. I loved its linear lines, the hood treatment, the red lines and the really cool side exiting split exhausts. This Danbury Mint model in its flopping silvery violet finish was quite well done for its age. The simple design of this 2nd generation is most appealing to me as later gens got more rounded and, frankly, a bit bloated for my taste I like that DM modeled the 335 HP Tri-Power 389 although it does lack the wiring that would exist on later Mint diecasts.
I owned a hardtop, tri-power, 4 speed ‘65 GTO in the mid eighties when it seemed people were trying to get rid of them cheap. Mine was Nightwatch blue, blue interior and at that time I absolutely detested Iris Mist. My how time changes things. 1965 was my favorite at the time and blue was my favorite on it. If I could build my ultimate GTO today it would be a hardtop ‘66 repainted Iris Mist, parchment interior. (Never mind the purists, never cared for them much!)
PS If someone in the group does AI, would you please do one up with Cragar SS’ on redlines.
Your photos are always great along with your commentary. Thank you for sharing and I continue to look for more of your content.

here u go Kevin! Been on my watchlist for ages. we have 64, 65, and 67 GTOs so 66 is the missing link
A real oldie but goodie. Thanks Rich. Wonder how many 1/24 diecast collections DO NOT have this model included?
I love all the GTOs up to 1972....just a beautiful car.
Great pictures and writeup as always Rich. Count me in as someone who loves that color.
Classic Metal Works supplied us with 66 GTO's. You could get one and repaint. Some of them were in kit form.
I resisted buying this model for years because of the criticism regarding it. I finally broke down and bought one from the secondary market and I was really pleasantly surprised by how nice it is. Great color. I'm very happy to own one.
Bought mine when they first came out. Loved in then, love it now.
Not my favorite GTO, but an impressive model and one I'm pleased to have.
