New scam using PayPal?? Has anyone seen/heard of this one?

I received an email from service@paypal.com saying this email confirms a credit card transaction that I paid GAMERSLAIR for $410.55 for a purchase of a Microsoft Xbox. I had not bought one of these. The receipt was not in my name and the shipping address was not mine. It was also unconfirmed. Under that address it has in bold print "If you haven't authorized this charge, click the link below to cancel the payment and get a full refund." I went to my PayPal account and there was no history of this transaction. I then went back to the email and clicked the link and it led me to a PayPal dispute page that looked offical and a place to log on. I sent this email to spoof@paypal.com as I believe it is a phishing/scam email. This is the first time I have seen something such as this. Has anyone else seen this or confirm this is indeed a scam?

Yes, it's a scam. I get it on all 3 of my eBay accounts.

Jeff, they want you to provide your user name and password. Don't do it.

Paypal.................

There is a very easy way to fix all these concerns,,,,,,as far I have gone so.

Don't use it anymore and go for Cashier's check or money order.

It is secured and hassle free if you can wait for your money for a week or so.

Paypal for me????????never again.

These phishing schemes are not limited to PayPal. They pretend to be credit card companies, ebay...

you name it! Never use an email link to log on to any online account. They're too easy to fake. If you have any reason to think the email might be legitimate, you should always go directly to the institution's website where you can verify that everything is fine with your account. I think PayPal is a very safe and useful auction tool for buyers and sellers and I wouldn't be without the service.

Your first mistake was clicking on the link. They've probably already got ya.

Not using PayPal will have NO effect on the fake emails.

I get fraud emails supposedly from banks that I have never had business with. You can still get the fake paypal emails, ebay emails, etc.

Thats why I always purchase the PayPal protection. I had a similar case, but with a diecast

Seller sent just the boxes and no car. It was a FM 1957 Ford Fairlane two tone blue, I thought it to be a bargain at $175.00 I reported it to PayPal and they refunded me in full. Believe me, you pay with a money order or a cashier's check and you are fried.

Actually, I made a mistake. I have 4 accounts including two....

...Power Seller accounts. I don't profess to know ALL of the eBay rules and guidelines (does anyone?) but I've never heard of a limitation to how many accounts one can have.

Sure, No there is no limitations.

its alright with ebay if you wish to have more than one account as long as you dont do anything to take advantage of anybody.

Money orders and cashiers checks not 100% safe...

I got a USPS money order the other day for an eBay sale.

I went to the post office to cash it and the clerk told me, as he was inspecting it, they've had several bogus USPS money order presented and they were nearly good enough fakes to slip by - right down to a watermark and a security thread. The watermark wasn't quite right however and that's how they caught it. Apparently the USPS doesn't keep a database of issued money orders and their amounts to verify to (?!?!).

Also cashiers checks can be faked. If your bank doesn't take the time to verify the check before honoring it, they can come back and deduct the funds from your account after the fact if the check turns out to be bogus.

You hear horror stories about Paypal but, so far anyway, I've not run into any issue using the service.
