Bill von Esser's '54 Corvette Carrera Panamericana entry. I had some interesting moments researching this car for DM. When they saw a conversion I did using an FM '53, they asked to borrow the model and do some research on some of the questionable features. I talked with von Esser's niece who used to work in the shop after school. She couldn't help much with the technical questions, but she regaled me with stories of celebs that frequented his Chicage Speed Shop, including Steve McQueen and, for you old folks out there, Dave Garroway. Whoda thought nerdy Dave was a car guy?
Didvshevrecall any of his great race stories from this car
@greatmachines She was just a young kid that worked after school and weekends for Uncle Bill cleaning the shop. She remembered the celebrities that frequented the place and had their cars worked on but it seems like she wasn't bitten by the car bug.
Thanks Rich
I bought this model some years ago from a shop in Switzerland.
Paid dearly for it, including customs.
Have it, love it. By the way, Dave Garroway was a car enthusiast. I remember seeing him on his morning show showing off some of the cars he owned. I don't recall the specific cars but it seems to me that one of them was a Jaguar XK 120 roadster.
@bob-jackman +At my viewing age, all I remember is his nerdy glasses and the star of the show..... J. Fred Muggs!
I believe I remember Dave. Was he not the person that did the Timex watch commercials?
@carsman1958 That was newscaster John Cameron Swayze for Timex. Why I remember this is beyond me.
That looks like a nice, one of the few Vettes that I don't own.
Rich, you are absolutely right. I remember that now. My bad.
@carsman1958 It's more like "Why would you remember that?"It's astounding to me the useless minutia that's still in my brain. I'd love to erase enough of that stuff to make room for more important matters... like where did I put my car keys? LOL
Ah yes Timex the watch that takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
Ah yes Timex the watch that takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
A perfect example of the importance of advertising.
