Mercedes-Benz had quit the European circuit after that famous and horrific crash 1955 crash at Le Mans, but they were still engaged in the US Sports Car Championship races to help sales in the US. Driver Paul O'Shea had already won the prior two championships in '55 and '56 driving the 300SLR "Gullwings". For 1957, Mercedes provided him with this super lightweight roadster with a souped up 3 liter. Racing manager Alfred Neubauer shipped over two of these SLS roadsters and 5 engines to O'Shea and rented the Lime Rock track for him to test the car. O'Shea ultimately took the 1957 SCCA Category D chamionship by a landslide. Only two of these cars were ever built and their reign ended when homologation rules demanded the production of 150 cars. The first vehicle was modified from an experimental car and the second was built from scratch.
