I still have the remnants of this old Hubley diecast model metal kit in 1:22 of the Packard phaeton automobile. I built this when I was a kid in about 1961 or so, but I didn't really know much about painting, so it is in natural zinc color !
The real car had a straight-eight engine and the motor and other parts were done nicely by Hubley, with the model kit mostly screwed together. These are some quick phone-camera images of it as it is presently.
Mike My wife found this exact model at a yard sale missing many more parts than yours. She brought it home and made a Steam Punk car out of it using clock springs for the fender mounted tires.
A really nice find here, Bob ! Your wife's acquisition and talent has this old Hubley 1930 Packard still doing a very useful job on display.
I built a few of those as a kid. My best work was the Model A Sedan. I just realized I don't have it anymore. It was probably left behind in one of my divorces. [[[sigh]]]
I also still have my 1933 Hubley Model SJ Duesenberg, which I sure found very cool back so many decades ago.
That's pretty cool Mike. I've never seen one until now. A nice piece of you childhood history. Thanks for sharing it with us. I dig seeing stuff like this.😎💯
A Hubley kits search on ebay brings up 442 of them, including a number of your Packards Mike, and a couple of Model As Rich
@geoff-jowett I spent a lot of hours with the Hubley kits, some of them actually pleasant. I can still smell the metal as I filed off the flashing, and see my black hands as I handled it. The kits were extremely labor intensive compared to plastic kits, but did have advantages over them. Later in life I actually restored the four Model A’s and a Chevy that I had cobbled together as a kid and it was actually very rewarding.
@kevins good work Kevin. Some of the kits for sale seem to be in excellent condition if you'd like to have another go!
@geoff-jowett I’m going to have to pass on that Geoff, seems like I have some kind of contract with my wife to paint all of our rooms, walls and ceilings, don’t know if I will survive that! Oh well, better get out and work on the leaves, I need to clear them off so I can resurface the driveway.
