PICS...$30 Diecasts...In Which I Discover That Collecting in Our Favorite Scale Can Still be Fun....

Even if the demise of DM is a done deal, I found out last Saturday that it's still possible to experience the thrill of "White Box Fever" with these two very different cars that I found at a small toy show and model contest in Bennington, Vt., for thirty bucks a pop....

I'm sure you all recognize DM's great '41 Chevy. Although this one came without the original box, paperwork, skirts or up top, it's otherwise "minty" and dust and paint rash free. It has been right up near the top of my "woulda, shoulda, coulda" list for a long time. I prefer the way it looks without the skirts anyway....

I'm a big fan of the woodgraining that was so popular on cars of the 40's, and DM captured the look perfectly on the dash and doors of this one....

The Icons 1965 427 Cobra S/C flew completely under my radar when it was released as a Wix promo a couple of years ago, but when I saw this one on display in Bennington I flipped....

Unlike the Chivvy, this one was MIB. I looked it over very closely before I laid down my hard earned cash. Fit and finish are superb and the only "flaws" I found on it were the dogleg door hinges and lack of sidewall detail on the tires, but I figured it was a pretty good deal for the price. ...

Interior and engine detail are excellent. Photo etched seatbelt buckles are a nice touch....

The "heat discolored" side pipes are a nice touch and look way better in person than my pic shows....

When I got it home and put it on the shelf, I realized that this little Cobra is the only 1960's car I have in my 1.24th collection, hard as that might be to believe!

Gene, two great cars and excellent pictures. Congratulations on your find. I have the Wix Cobra and the FM Cobra next to each other on display and think the Wix car is superior because of the side pipe detail...also, the Wix car is actually heavier than the FM car if weight translates into the equation.

Good going Gene. I have the "Baby Caddy" and Love it. I'm guessing it's the lighting....

but yours looks yellow and not light tan or beige.

Thanx, Bob. The Cobra is really different from what I usually collect, but it's so nice I just......

...couldn't resist it.

The light definitely had something to do with it, John, but I confess to fiddling with the color...

...saturation in the editing process, too. I always thought that the grille more closely resembles the '41 Buick's. And thanx.

The FM Cobra is lighter because it's not diecast, it's made out of aluminum like the real one.
