The 58 Edsel does not belong on the "ugly" list.

In the landscape of all the other 58 models, the Edsel fit right it.

Way back when.......

the Gremlins were new and I was hauling American Motors products to the dealers. I pulled up in front of an AMC dealer one afternoon with a whole load of new Gremlins. Well, I'm getting all the unloading skids out and getting everything all set up to start unloading and I happened to noticed a boy maybe l0 or 11 years watching. Well that was not unusual it happened quite often that someone would watch the whole process of unloading a load of cars from the trailer. Well, after the whole load of off and all the skids were put away, I was pulling off my coveralls and putting them away, I happened to ask the boy how he liked the new cars and the new Gremlins? The boy looked at me and hesitated a second or two, and then with as straight a face possible he said to me...."It looks like a big rollerskate". And with that he just got on his bike and rode away. I just stood there for a moment and then laughed and thought to myself...he might be right.

But in defense of AMC, look how many car makers both American and foriegn started copying the cut off rear design after the Gremlin came out. Only later, they started calling them hatchbacks.

I agree George!

The Edsel was not appreciated when it was new, but it's by no means ugly.

I believe there is a difference between gaudy and ugly.

I agree with the list except for the '58 Edsel and the K-car. The Edsel is gaudy but not ugly IMHO. If it qualifies as "ugly", then I would add virtually all of the GM '58 lines with it. The '58 Olds and Buicks really pushed their luck with design.

The K-car was boring but effective. Let's not over look the Scion "box" and Honda Element if we want to assess the K-car.

Gremilns

I agree with the kid, I drove a 1976 Gremlin X right after I graduated high School in 1978, boy did that straight six Gremlim X haul some a-s. I finally got rid of it after I drove it to the ground could no longer open any doors, used the spare tire to hold up the drivers seat, lost a back pipe and muffler, man that thing sounded bad.
