Question about glass shelves

Need expert advice here.

Do you think glass shelves 1/4" thick would be safe to hold diecast cars (34" long)?

My glass shelves are 48 inches long and support 12 full size or 14 smaller, Mustangs - Camaros - 'Cudas, cars per shelf.

If it is tempered glass

Wow! A diecast 34" long -- what is it?

I assume you mean the shelf is 34" long.

Use tempered glass. It is much stronger and not susceptible to shattering. I would also support it about every foot, as failure would be caused by tensile stress at the bottom if allowed to sag.

Rich, is that Flash Gordon and Emperor Ming on the lower shelve?

One of my favorite after school TV programs.

Hey, it was a yes or no question, LOL. I have shelves 36 that are 1/4" thick and are holding about eight cars on each shelf. Never had any problems. And, I don't think tempered glass is stronger, it just allows the glass to break into thousands of tiny pieces like a cars side window, instead of breaking into dangerous big shards of glass. They use tempered glass in glass doors and larger windows. I know, I am in the home improvement business.

Live!!! From the plant Mongo!!!

Yup... that's them. I grew up with Flash and Buck as a kid too. Figures are a hobby of mine. More stuff scattered about the house to drive my wife nuts.

Ok, let me re-state this

I currently have a bookcase with wood shelves supported on each end. I want to replace the wood shelves with 1/4" glass shelves, again, supported ONLY on the ends. Will this work?

Yes My cabinet has 12 1/4"x 12-3/4"x38" shelves

I have 10 cars on shelves and one shelf is holding 12 Mustangs.
No apparent deflection. 33" should definetly be OK

Mine are 3/8" inch tempered glass 11" inches deep, 48" long ...

However I have support brackets for each shelf in the middle at 24" plus at each corner on the ends. I have 9 cars per shelf. 34" may very well hold, but I wouldn't risk it without support in the center.
