Question for you diecast historical gurus..... The 1967 Plymouth GTX was made by FM (5/96 - Petty car) and by DM (11/08). I'm curious as to why FM never did more with their 1/24 tooling as they had a 12 year jump on DM. Anyone know why they didn't make other versions? I wonder the same about DM but that is another question.
I wondered that myself when I got my Petty car.
I'm sure there would have been a substantial tooling revamp, and expense to make a stock GTX out of the petty version. the body was formed and shaped for the wheels and tires, and of course the interior engine, and all the substructure was not very stock at all. And I thought the Petty FM Belvedere had a roof that was a bit too high? the DM model on the other hand is VERY well done.
I would guess? the reason was License. By law a 67 could be made w/o license in 92 but that could cause other issues with models FM may have been negotiating on at that time? Corporate Good Will you know. The US Trademark law allows for after 25 years the design becomes public domain thus no fee(s)must be paid( one still doesn't want to piss off a potential Licensor). I'm not a Mopar historian so, did The Franklin Mint make other Chrysler cars (1970,71 Cuda/Challenger & 2003 Dodge Viper come to mind) that The Franklin Mint did not wish to risk losing that/those license(s).
