I seem to recall that a popular engine used in these was the 394 Olds.

This thread reminds me of when I was a gas jockey/grease monkey at a garage back in 1970. A young guy I worked with built an Austin Dorset based rod with a 364 cu. in. Buick drive train. Man that thing could haul off the line.
Here is a pic of one very similar looking (not the actual one I refer to).
