Skirt-ectomy on the FM 56 Chevy convertibles (PICS)
Seeing Clifford Reads super skirt removal work on his 1939 Ford prompted me to dig out photos of my FM 56 Chevies I modified quite some time ago. Personally, I've never liked skirts and was thrilled when DM started making them removable on some of their models.
I am no fan of fender skirts, so off they came. Taking the models apart was not too difficult, but I did have a hard time getting them back together. Grinding the skirts off was fairly easy, the hardest part was going slow enough to not take too much off. Surface damage to the paint was minimal, and touch up of the bottom was quite easy.

Great job Robert. The '56 Bel Air has great body lines anyway...
...with or without the fender-skirts.
Some cars looks good with skirts while others don't. To me, 'most' of the time, it depends on whether or not a body line or chrome trim is carried across the wheel-well. If they are; then, skirts can complete the look.
It really depends on the car and its' style though.

I do not have the skills nor the cranial capacity to even to begin to envision such a process

If skirts were part of an integral design I don't mind them but ....
I dont care for them when they were offered as "add ons" and were never part of the original design. Take the skirt off the 60s thunderbirds or Cadillacs and the cars just dont look right!
