Been raining all day again here in Melbourne, and most of the last week. Unfortunately more areas affected by flooding. Means I'm still cooped up building kits
1/24 1932 Renault Vivastella. Nice 30s car and kit. I'm pleased with my maroon and olive green colors, which are period correct.
And a 1/24 Jaguar XK SS. Great story to these cars:
Following Jaguar's withdrawal from competition at the end of the 1956 season, a number of completed and partly completed D-types remained unsold at the Browns Lane factory. In an attempt to recoup some of the investment made in building these unused chassis, and to exploit the lucrative American market for high-performance European sports cars, Sir William Lyons decided to convert a number to road-going specification. Only minor changes were made to the basic D-type structure: the addition of a passenger side door; the removal of the large fin behind the driver; and the removal of the divider between passenger and driver seats. In addition, changes were made for cosmetic, comfort and legal reasons: a full-width, chrome-surrounded windscreen was added; sidescreens were added to both driver and passenger doors; a rudimentary, folding, fabric roof was added for weather protection; chromed bumpers were added front and rear (a styling cue later used on the E-type); XK140 rear light clusters were mounted higher on the wings; and thin chrome strips were added to the edges of the front light fairings.
By early 1957 a total of 16 of the planned production run of 25 XKSS's had been completed at Jaguar's Browns Lane plant. On the evening of 12 February a fire broke out, destroying the remaining nine in mid-production. All of the destroyed vehicles had been destined for North America.[1] Most of the previously built 16 XKSSs were also sold in the US.
After doing well with not getting excess glue where it shouldnt be I stuffed up a bit on the windscreen and side windows here. This model is a sort of proxy until I one day find a long sort after Spark/LM Miniatures D Type. Also I've read the D Type influenced the later beautiful XKE and there are evident common styling cues.
Both phenomenal! That Jag is to-kill-for!
Several really nice models here. As a Jaguar collector, I especially enjoyed your blog on the XKSS and your fine Jaguars imaged here. Great model building and thank you for sharing.
thank you gentlemen, I really appreciate your supportive comments. John B the Model Master Clear Parts Cement (Glue) & Window Maker is very hard to find, both local suppliers are out of stock as are the 3 or 4 direct U.S suppliers. I've contacted an ebay seller to see if they will sell to Australia. Thanks for the tip, really looks like exactly what I need.
Just a PS. I did not want to sound dismissive of the flood situation here in eastern Australia. I've included a local news link that gives a brief overview of the national situation. I'm in suburban Melbourne Victoria and so far have not experienced similar flooding to what we experienced about 3 weeks ago, but as mentioned it continues to rain here.
