It took Mercedes-Benz a decade after WWll to get back to producing powerful luxury cars. The evolution began in 1951 with the 1st gen W186 "300" and finally attained full luxury status with the 1958 W189 "300D" called the "Adenauer" after West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer who was a passionate devotee of Mercedes passenger cars. This model was limousine length with fuel injectioned version of their venerable 3.0 liter SOHC 6. Its design incorporated a pillarless configuration that turned this cabriolet into a phaeton. In the interior, there were all the luxury appointments imaginable and included a host of options including a writing desk. It was produced in hardtop, cabriolet and an extended chassis ("Lang") with a Landau body until 1962.
The model is one of CMC's greatest hits with a figure of the Chancellor himself.
Beautiful photos and car, but not something I would add to my collection. Thanks for sharing.
I just love this one. Wish I had the white version too.
Great story Rich, and a beautiful model. 💯👍
another one that took me years to find at a price I could afford. as always great pics and background info, thanks Rich
@geoff-jowett I acquired the silver one when it was first issued but the figure was not included. A beautiful model in the CMC tradition.
@bob-jackman The resin figure is my creation. Well, actually it was an unpainted resin German Preiser figure I painted up. It looks amazingly like the old boy.
Love the detail on this car, glad to own one!

@geoff-jowett Yes, I nearly bought one last week but bowed out at the last minute, price + postage 😞 😞
An extremely good-looking automobile and replica of it. It is very attractive in silver/grey, but would look excellent in any color. Konrad had a classy ride !
