The 1938 Phantom Corsair was basically a concept car designed by Heinz Company scion Rust and Maurice Schwartz of coachbuilders Bohman & Schwartz of southern California. Built on a Cord 810 chassis and powered by a 4.7 liter Lycoming V8. It has the Cord front wheel drive system via a 4 speed transmission. It's a 6 passenger 2 door coupe with 4 passengers in the front (one to the left of the driver!) and only two passengers in the rear due to a rather large liquor cabinet. Long, low (57") and aerodynamic with loads of interior features, the prototype cost $38,000 to build and the production model were to be priced at $12,500. In 1939 Rust Heinz died in a car accident so the Corsair never went into production. The car did make a splash in Hollywood starring in the 1938 movie "The Young in Heart" where it was presented as "The Flying Wombat - The Car That Thinks For You". It now rests in the Harrah Collection but can still be seen on the road, virtually, in the video games "Mafia" and L.A. Noire".

Fine images of this amazing and extremely sleek automobile ! Back in 1938 it must have been sensational and pretty astounding to onlookers when it drove by on the street. What maker did this great looking model in 1/24th ?

Great post Rich. I have the Brooklin version but this larger issue is outstanding. Four in front and a liquor cabinet. Learn something new every day. Nice replication of the Flying Wombat for the movie.

most of our local wombats have a bit of trouble getting of the ground. Is there an airborne North American species?
