Most of us remember the FM Rolls re-issue in red that was recalled, but many of us don't know exactly why. If you look at the stance of the model, it has a significantly wider track that the first blue issue. The wheels on the red model extend beyond the fenders where the original is classically underslung. It turns out that the wheels used on the red error model have an inner hub that causes the track to widen dramatically.
Here's the blue model wheels:
Here's the error red wheels:
Interesting Rich, I can see why it was recalled. Having the wheels stick out like that would be very dissatisfying. Looks like a major error by FM which should have been caught before distribution.
But is it true that there were only 80 made?? I bought one 3 years ago for 25 dollars and have seen more than 5 on ebay the last 3 years. So i have the impression that there were more than 80 error models made....
@donderbeestje One run of this error version was made and distributed to their brick and mortar stores. The managers were then notified to either junk them or send them back. At that time they also stopped fulfilling mail orders. 80 seems an unlikely number as a single run would have been either 1000 or 2000 I would think. I guess the short answer is "Who knows?". I got mine for free from the store. It was: "You want it; take it. They're going in the dumpster."
- That sounds plausible. On the net numbers of 80 are mostly found. Btw, the wheels of the black/silver RR have the same issue as the red one. Both rear wheels extend the fenders.
