Carroll Shelby's 427 Cobra SC serial#CX3015 was born one of 23 427 Competition Roadsters in 1965. It was shipped to Ford's Advanced Vehicles in England that year with a stablemate and two R-code Mustang GT350s to do a European promotional tour. When it was returned to Shelby in 1966, he set about to create what he labeled the "Cobra To End All Cobras", AKA: the "Super Snake". Outfitting the 427 with twin Paxton superchargers achieving 800hp. This power was too much for the standard 4 speed transmission to bear so a 3 speed automatic replaced it. Shelby refined this Cobra to be street legal. Actually two of these Super Snakes were made and he sold the other to his friend.... Bill Cosby, who, after one drive, returned it absolutely terrified by it. As to the fate of that 2nd car, the next owner drove it into the Pacific Ocean. Shelby kept his car until 2007 when he auctioned it off at Barrett-Jackson. At the auction Shelby related the tale of his apprehension by the Nevada State Police after being clocked at 190mph. When the bidding war ended, it hammered down at $5.5 million and the new owner was, you could have guessed this... Ron Platte. The car, in Guardsman Blue, still retains virtually all its original parts including the 1967 aluminum hood. It was auctioned again @B-J with an estimate of $8 million but sold for a mere $5 million (someone got a bargain?).
Model by Franklin Mint.
OMG....the guy who drove the 2nd one into the ocean and wrote it off must have been suicidal when he read the auction results!
Rich, thanks so much for the detailed history of the Super Snake. This is one of my favorite out of the 8 that I have from FM.
