That was certainly the mantra I grew up believing it as gospel. ( I never really paid much attention to what European cars could do with 3 liters) Anyway for '69 and '70 Pontiac decided to replace displacement with a bit of engineering with their Ram Air options. Ignoring the urge to start stuffing 455s under the hood, they used the venerable 400 cid V8 and equipped it with high flow heads, a high lift camshaft, a freer flow exhaust and gave the Ram Air Vl a rating of a modest 370 HP only to help keep insurance rates lower. Only 327 of these Ram Air Vls were built and were equipped with the Ram Air Vl engine, a Muncie close ratio 4 speed, a 3.90 limited slip differential, hood mounted tach, power steering a discs, console, heavy duty shocks and springs and Firestone 14" 'Wide Ovals'. GMP released two of the 1970 convertibles in Cardinal red and Black and, like the other 1/24 releases didn't sell worth a darn and were practically giveaways on the secondary market and with their entire lineup, only became appreciated AFTER GMP gave up on us. This is certainly a model on par with the Mints offerings right down to the photoetched keys in the ignition.

Beautiful model and pics Rich. I have several GMP models, and yes, they will go toe to toe with ANY Mint model...period. I'd read an article by famed Pontiac historian Roger Huntington, back in the 80's, that stated the true hp rating on the Ram Air IV was consistently around 440-445. But, as you said, was downrated for insurance purposes. But it was down a bit on torque compared to the 455's.

@geno Of course the 455s were also 6-8 mpg guzzlers requiring that 32 gallon tank. LOL

The GMP 1/24 models were every bit as good as the mint models.

I have to agree the GMP models were just as nice as any DM/FM model.  I have them all and love everyone of them.

I'm in too. Their Mustangs as well, are brilliant.

That looks great in red Geno, thanks for the pics
