This may be a FIRST....
Today while dusting and polishing my car shelves, I came across something disturbing.
Franklin Mint's 1955 Pontiac (black over red) hardtop has some interesting warping. Yes, I said warping! The hood of the car and the grill are bent and distorted just like the plastic promo models of the 1960's that we played with.
The hood is bent, won't close, and the grill is crooked. Has anyone ever had this happen to a die-cast before? I've heard of the paint rash issues, but never this one.
Very disturbing!

George, the same thing happened to the DM 66 Corvette...
..and was chronicled here by many folks. It affected the hood. It warps and in some cases breaks altogether.
This one:
DM 1966 Corvette.
Thanks Tony! I wasn't aware of the Corvette, and didn't realize this could happen. Do we know the cause? My Pontiac front-end looks like it rear-ended a car in front of it.
Not a laughing matter, but that's how it looks.
I'm really bummed about this. It's the first car I've ever noticed issues with on my shelves.

Rick Hanmore explained it to me but I forget the...
..technical details. It's a flaw in the metal.
I had a CMC deteriorate like that!
It was gem mint when I packed it away, years later (about 5) I took it out of the box to find blistering paint, broken top rails, axle that literally was broken in two places, warped panel etc. mad me sick to my stomach!!!! This is Zemack degradation. Some type of internal break down in the metal which once it starts it gets worse and doesn't stop!! Someone has a Nash metropolitan that suffered from this, I had a DM Mosport green Corvette fall apart due to this, have seen some RED DM 1960 Thunderbirds fall apart etc.. Sad on a car that cost $150-$200
My Esders Bugatti crumbled.
The hood on my Esders Bugatti crumbled into many pieces while inside its box.
AS did mine ... just a beautiful Green car reduced to warp and waste
Thanks for making me sick. I really love that car and to find it with the caved in hood and crooked grill today just devastated me. It is a limited edition of only 550 from FM, with mine being #199.
I've examined the car again closely and there is paint rash and cracking all over the hood, top, and trunk. The "suspender" chrome strips on the hood are also cracked in half. And the right front fender by the front door is pulling away from the car.
It's a MESS!
I also examined the FM companion 1955 Pontiac (red over black) hardtop limited edition of 550 (mine is #58), and there is some noticeable paint rash and cracking on the hood, top, and trunk as well, but it is not as bad as the black over red one.
I'm really sick about this. I take good care of my cars for this to be happening, though I know it's not my fault. This was a huge eye-opener for me today, and my die-cast car buying days could be over.
THANKS Franklin Mint for selling JUNK!

Thought most those were turds right out the box meaning, when they were new, most came with rash
Robert and Dennis so didi my Esders. The hood on mine resembled a potato chip and the rear suspension collapsed.I was able to find a distressed replacement missing the radiator cap and windshield and put mine on the replacement. So far so good.
I am sorry to hear that George. I have both of these Pontiacs as well.
I will check them out this weekend, the Black Over Red has always had some rash.
The sad thing is this isn't just FM.
I have a CMC Horch that is falling apart. My '31 Ford Pickup in red from DM had the front suspension collapse. My '59 Impala conv in silver from DM has had the trunk hinges disintegrate. There are at least three other DM models that have had parts just crumble. I also have two GMP models with issues as well. Basically, it is all very sad. Resin here I come.
To be honest, FM is probably the models I have the least problems with, so far.

John which GMP models that you own have issues??
I have the blue Mercury Cyclone, orbit orange convertible GTO, black GN Buick and the red Shelby Mustang convertible and all are perfect! I thought GMP was the only company that didn't exhibit rash/paint issues

legal action?
is some form of class action against the mints viable? Clearly we have been sold defective products.
I have the '68 Shelby-Mustang in Black that has a door hinge that broke off.
The hinge just crumbled. The other is my '67 Mustang convertible in burgundy. The paint is just peeling right off on the trunk and rear body. The last time I looked at it, it appeared to be bowing at the rear as well. I was so upset about that one, I packed it away. Who knows what it looks like now.
