That's what Larry Shinoda was told when he was brought on from GM to design this TransAm worthy 302 Mustang. The 'boss' was "Bunkie" Knudson, ex-GM head who took Shinoda with him. When the scope and purpose of the project was finally revealed to him, Shinoda, had it named the Boss 302. The G code HiPo 302 cid engine was not your father's 302. It basically just shared displacement. Its horsepower was (under) rated to match the Z28 at 290 hp. The Boss 302 with all its aerodynamics, race suspension and power train existed solely for homolgation purposes to run TransAm as a 'stock' car. Between 1969 and '70, a total of 7013 were produced. The MSRP was $3720. Pristine examples now auction in the $200K to $300K range. Model by Franklin Mint:
Terrific images of this extremely cool Mustang and FM model of it. They did a really good and detailed 1/24 version of this one, which looks great in red.
As usual, nice pictures and writeup Rich. Have it, love it.
A great 1:1 Mustang and a great 1:24 Mustang model !
Nice pictures and history as usual, Rich. FM took some artistic license with the paint color on this one. Although it looks great in Red, the 1969 Boss 302 was only available in four colors: Bright Yellow, Calypso Coral, Acapulco Blue, and Wimbledon White. FM did do one in Calypso Coral as a Walmart exclusive. I think it was priced at $60. It came in window box packaging mounted on a plastic base. You can see the two mounting points on chassis.
@pete-rovero Thanks for that reminder Pete. When the WalMart models came out, I made the rounds of several stores and was able to find all six. I found four of the models at one store. When I went to check out, the young lady cashier said there must be a mistake as each model was $60.00 so she called her supervisor over. The supervisor agreed there must be a mistake because no one would ever pay $60.00 for a toy car. When I said I would take them, they looked at me like I was nuts...perhaps they were right.
@bob-jackman I had a similar experience when Revell Creative Masters dumped their Hugger Orange Camaros in some big box department store I can't remember.
I bought two of the six, the yellow Camaro Z28 and the Boss 302. There was also a Cuda (didn't buy this because it had broken side view mirror), a 57 Chevy and a 56 Corvette. What was the sixth car, a model A? I think these cars are fairly rare, as only one set was sent to each Walmart store to see how well they would sell. Great score, Bob!
@pete-rovero Pete, I am a lousy detail guy and record keeper. The boxes I have for these Walmart cars are buried deep in a closet in my garage where I can't reach them. I know for a fact that the sixth model was noy a Model A. Perhaps someone here who keeps better records can tell us the sixth model.
I have the green Cuda, and I think this is the 57 Bel Air hardtop? Kinda like Bob, I would need to half demolish the house to find the box. I do remember the fuss when they came out. Lot if indignation about "cheapening the brand" because of selling in Walmart.
I'm really curious now as to what the 6th car was? Google cant seem to come up with anything.
Yep, that's the Walmart '57 Chevy. I remember it being blue. Still trying to figure out what the sixth car is!
