There was some detail painting to do first like the bare undersides of those "wooden" fenders in the front and washing the leaf springs to delineate the leafs. The weathering was just done to show dirt and grime as well as a touch of paint scuffing and rust. I washed the tires to accent the tread and transferred some groundwork to the 4 road tires. What you weather your model is dependent upon the groundwork you're making. I decided not to create a muddy mess so the dirt road has no signs of recent rain, just ruts. The only part of this vignette that lacks weathering is the flag. I was brought up never to desecrate it (those were the days) so looking at it now, it's certainly a bit too vibrant. The figures were either reworked conversions (the driver and rear passenger were a Stuka pilot and gunner); the other two were sculpted from scratch. The clothing were mostly lead foil and A+B epoxy with micro-balloons for the sheep skin collars and linings.

This is the most authentic model of the Thomas Flyer that I have ever seen. Incredible workmanship Rich. You need to get a foreigner to weather that flag.

Rich, didn't you advocate for the weathered production version. I assume this model was done before FM made their version. Outstanding skills!

Amazing work Rich!  One has to have a special eye for doing this kind of detail work, and you and JB definitely have it.

What an amazing job. That really makes this model so realistic. A work of art.

@chav The story: At one of those annual FM bashes at their Media, PA HQ, they had open voting for your wish list diecast and I spent half the afternoon stuffing the ballot box for the Thomas Flyer. I already had in my mind what I wanted to do with it. Perhaps a year later, what to my wondering eyes should appear? Unbelievable. The dream dio would soon come to fruition. I would never petitioned FM to do a weathered / distressed model. Those factory jobs are usually overdone and ham-handedly. As it turned out, the model needed a bit of detail painting first and the idea is coordinate it with the groundwork it's displayed on. I wasn't looking to plaster it with fake mud but rather to subtlely make it look like it's been on the road too long between car washes.
