Perhaps my favorite car of all time is the Volkswagen ‘49-52 Split Window. I saw my first one in the garage of friends of my parents in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. It belonged to their son, a doctor returning from service in Europe. It was a dark blue gray ‘52. I was 7 years old. My love of VW’s began when I saw that car.  Minichamps has done many variations of the Beetle, one of them being the ‘52. What makes these ‘52 replicas unique is that they have opening engine lids. They came in three colors, beige, green and dark blue gray. My first car was a brand new red ‘68.

The Minichamps version is the export model which had chrome trim that the one for the European market lacked.

Below is the Royal Red ‘68 that I bought some 16 years later. Beside it is our Shantung Yellow ‘71 VW 411. I wish we still had both these VW’s

Thanks David. Wonderful split window VWs. Great images of the real cars and the model. I had forgotten about the lack of chrome on the European version.

Thanks David.  I have always been a fan of the VW Beetle, early 50s thru '72.  I have owned a '58 which was almost indestructible and '71 and '74 Super Beetles.  I would like to have a mid-60s Beetle for a fun little driver...at least until the seriously cold temps hit....remembering the so-called heater and defroster...lol.

Following your lead, here are a couple more VWs.  These two are Schuco 1/43s of mine that IMO are interesting; a 1950 split window and circa 1956 oval:

@jack-dodds

LOVE 'em both! The 50 with luggage is dynamite and the 56 with trailer is fantastic!

@perrone1 Yeah my fave is the split window with the luggage in the rack.  When I saw them both on ebay I couldn't pass them up.
