Nice ! I think I saw a concept car at a Chicago Auto Show.
"Kammback" - two concepts were made by Pininfarina for GM!

An interesting GM concept which unfortunately came to nothing, partly because Pontiac and Chevrolet couldn't agree on a common body style and partly because the likely selling price for what was essentially a re-bodied "budget" Trans Am/Camaro would put it way into premium territory (and would compete for Corvette sales). The plans and the two prototypes (which varied slightly in detail, mainly around the rear hatch) were sold to a private outfit which built an unknown number of replicas using the customer's Trans Am as the basis.
I came across the Type K in 2003 and did a conversion based on the 1:43 Yat Ming Trans Am and using photos of one of the restored originals. I've shown it here before but just for the purposes of comparison with the forthcoming Matrix version I make no apology for showing it again. (Sad old rockers just love recycling their greatest hits.)
The tricky bit, obviously, was those big side windows, for which I made separate left and right balsa moulds which were then push-moulded into heated plastic. I found a good photo of the big Firebird emblem and copied it onto waterslide transfer paper, which worked quite well.
Although GM obviously claimed the Type K was a wholly original styling concept, Ferrari actually produced a one-off with a remarkably similar look in 1972, based on the Daytona.
This has been modelled by Matrix, although I only found that out today. Don't know how I missed it before now.
There was an even earlier Ferrari shooting brake, another one-off exercise, this time bodied by Vignale in 1965 based on a 330GT and, again unknown to me, Matrix has done that one as well.

Great post, Graeme. Thanks for the background. I'm thinking the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan fits in there too...kinda.
