Aaah, to be a rich playboy in the 1930s. Hedonist Phillipe Baur managed to secure one of only 2 Cadillac V16 bare chassis sold and had it sent to his home town of Lausanne, Switzerland and gave it to Willy Hartmann whose coachbuilding company was just down the road. The resulting cabriolet, if nothing else, was more of a paean to the designs of Giuseppe Figoni of the French house of Figoni et Falaschi. Finished in 1937, it was on the road (although it's hard to picture 22' of automobile navigating local European roads) for a couple years until stored away for 10 years during WWll. Postwar, the car fell on hard times with multiple owners and multiple accidents. When it was found in a field in 1968, it was assumed to be a Figoni et Falaschi creation despite W.Hartmann plaque. Fully 'restored" by best guesses, the plaque was stripped and a replica F&F unit placed and sold at Barrett-Jackson as such for $1.4 million. When it's provenance was finally uncovered, I assume a Hartmann plaque is now affixed to the dash. The redesigned triangular Cadillac logo appears on the model's dash and if you have an electron microscope handy, it should read: "Carrosserie Hartmann, Lausanne, Cadillac".
I have a TSM 1/43 scale of a 1934 Hartmann Roadster painted beige with orange details and red interior. The car is huge.
@bob-jackman Mine is done in Barrett-Jackson "resale red" ( or perhaps F&F red). It was off-white for quite awhile too.
Fascinating. I had never heard of this one. Huge indeed!
Rich, thanks for bringing up this subject. It appears we all agree that the car is huge.
"...if you have an electron microscope..."
Or your photography Rich- it's practically the same thing! I too had never seen this French-Cadillac before. It's pretty wild!
@chris Well, it's actually a Swiss Cadillac. Here's one French Cadillac: a 1948 series 62 Cabriolet by Jacques Saoutchik.
@rich-sufficool Correct - I misread that the design was "in the spirit of the Frech house."
"...was more of a paean to the designs of Giuseppe Figoni of the French house of Figoni et Falaschi."
Although I do like this purple & black French Cadillac better. 😎
