50 years ago today, May 30, 1969....
...the Andretti curse was broken. Mario won the Indianapolis 500 in his back-up car, the Brawner Hawk, following a wreck in his 4wd Lotus days beforehand. Andretti could win in almost any competition - USAC champ 3 times, F1 champion, a NASCAR win at the Daytona 500, sports car wins at Sebring, Daytona, and a class win at Le Mans. He even won the Pikes Peak hill climb. If you can get the latest Autoweek magazine, there's a great article about him.
