In the U.S., the Ford Mustang was first put on sale at Ford dealerships nationwide, with a suggested retail price of $2,368, and had purchases and purchase requests for more than 22,000 units on the first day. In its first year on the market, there would be 418,812 of the Mustangs purchased, making it "the most successful new car ever introduced".

The wildly successful start of a legendary automobile ! It was a real contrast to the Edsel misfortune and losses of just a few years previously.
HA! My best friend, who's owned over 300 Ford offerings-including about 250 Mustangs-is celebrating today. By contrast, I've NEVER owned a Mustang, but there's still time.
And yes, compared to the Edsel failure, the success of Mustang made all Ford executives look like MIT graduates, especially one young man in particular, Lee something ....... 😎 😎
I have only a handful of Mustangs in 1/43. Here's my FM ... the opening features are neat but put up against anything from say, Stamp or Goldvarg and, well, it's CLEAR that 1/43 has evolved quite nicely! 😀 😀
I owned two Mustangs in my youth. A 65 fastback and a 68 convertible. Wish I still had both. They were reliable and a lot of fun.
I have only owned one Mustang. MIne was an 89 GT convertible with a five speed manual. I kept the car for 21 years and sold it to a friend's son who proceeded to abuse the car and after two years it was a rolling wreck. Everytime I saw the car I felt like I had to apologize to it for letting it get into the hands of a jerk who destroyed it.
I owned two Mustangs. The first was a 1967 hardtop, which was my first car. The second was a 2007 hardtop.
