ALFA ROMEO 1300 ZAGATO

image

Sometimes, exceptional creations are made by sheer happenstance, à la Champagne or the limited production of Alfa Romeo’s Giulietta Sprint Zagato. As the story goes, in 1956, Italian coachbuilder Elio Zagato received a damaged Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce that needed new coachwork. Zagato created a lighter, more aerodynamic, minimalist-styled body that was made out of thin aluminum panels. When fit to the existing Veloce foundation, the new coachwork transformed the Giulietta into a speedster that could compete with—and outperform—GT cars of the era that were powered by engines with greater displacement. (for more of this story, see

https://robbreport.com/motors/cars/1960-alfa-romeo-offered-by-gooding-company-2912685/   )

And, in the normal course of events for 1/43 scale models, the fine English firm of MIKANSUE in their Grand Tourisme line of kit cars, produced their #17, the 1300 ZAGATO, and it eventually found its way to me.  This production was about thirty years ago;  I don't have an exact date.  But a week or so ago, I opened the box and here's what happened.

This one has been fun! Well. . . , I'm glad this wasn't one of my first Mikansue model kits;  I might have hesitated over any later purchases.  But by now, It's all in the game!

Another great build of an antique kit, David. You have been very busy of late.

I have over forty 1/43 scale kits still unbuilt. Your output makes me envious.

David, I kind of envy your "over forty."  Seems like building a model does give me something to do.  And I'm expecting that VW convertible in today's mail.  That should be interesting.

Fantastic job!   You know I love Alfas!   Those windows look a bit small though, but it is an old old Mikansue kit after all!

Thanks, Karl.  I don't believe I've ever seen a 1:1 Alfa, much less another Zagato.  I have seen pictures on the web, and that's what I use for building my models.  I have seen mentions of other 1/43 models of this Zagato, but I've never seen one.  I think my next project is going to be a VW.

Bang did a nice job on this one 25 years ago!  Diecast in Italy! More normally called a Giulietta SZ (Sprint Zagato)

Bang 7160 Giullietta SZ

I also have this long tail version from the 1961 Mille Miglia, from the partworks made in China.

Alfa Romeo Sport Collection Giulietta SZ 1961

The closest 1:1 I ever saw was in Chicago 2018...  Might not be 100% original but was very beautiful.  Note the double bubble...  Called a Giulia Sprint Veloce (SV), but had the Z (Zagato) badges...
