I don't know if we're a bit more sceptical over here, or possibly not as warm-hearted, but if I saw that I'd just laugh. Must be the easiest scam in the world, just getting discounts of people by playing the sympathy card. And I doubt if he was a 'war veteran' he'd stoop that low anyway.
