My much-anticipated 1:43 1963 Rolls Royce Phantom V James Young Limousine arrived today, and answered more than one question for me. First, why did the the seller post such small photos of the model on eBay and, second, what would the quality be of an ATC model - a maker I had not encountered, yet?
The model looked very much like the original, of which I have photos, and it has been a favorite RR of mine for some time. The seller also has the 1962 Phantom V by Park Ward, which I also like very much and decided to purchase it, also, after the arrival of the '63 James Young. The photos posted of this model were also on the petite side:
Well, the day of reckoning is upon me and I admit to being a bit disappointed. Here are photos taken ten minutes after its arrival.
The paint work and overall design do not flatter the original, one of the finest automobiles on the road. The rear opera window was cut imperfectly, and there are many small signs of shoddy workmanship with a car that deserved much better treatment. From this experience I will not be buying the '62 Park Ward, which is a double disappointment, for this is one of my favorite RR automobiles. Such is model collecting, right?
To return this model to China would not be inexpensive and would likely use up at least 20-30% of the refund, so I will have to see what they will do, after they return from Chinese New Year celebrations on the 20th.
Just another educational opportunity...
I share your frustration with ATC. I had purchased the 1/43 Jonckheere Rolls in gold from an eBay seller in China a number of years ago. It does display well in profile, and the round doors open, which is a plus. However, I've lost count of how many times I've glued the chromed doorsteps back on, and the underside is quite shoddy. Since then, I've acquired the 1/18 Jonckheere in black and have considered disposing of the 1/43 as my display space starts to dwindle. As of today, it's still there.
@paul-rouffa Whoa, I also had the ATC Jonckheere RR on my list. Another bullet dodged. At this point ATC is off the list, for me. What make is your 1:18 Jonckheere?
@gdh It's BoS. Rich Sufficool has the same model in gold that he purchased before me, and it has no manufacturing branding at all. Please ignore the lack of hood ornament; I broke it myself when I was reattaching one of the doorsteps 🙄. Don't let that dissuade you, it's a gorgeous, hefty model. If you happen to get one, ask your seller if they have a spare hood ornament, I'll buy it off you!
@paul-rouffa This one has been added to my list. Thank you for sharing it and I will ask for another hood ornament when I buy it. I just knocked the hood ornament off of my 1:43 Twincam 62 Bentley S2 Park Ward DHC and my partner suggested we acquire one of those new 3D printers and begin making hood ornaments for models, just in case I do it again.
@gdh That's a great idea! Sign me up if you do, I'm starting to lose track of how many 1/43 hood ornaments I'm missing.
@paul-rouffa Most public libraries have FREE 3-D printers - but like home 3-D printers - you'll need to bring your own STL or 3MF files. And THAT'S where the money is - who the hell knows how to develop STL/3MF files? Not me! 🙄 I still find it cheaper to commission those already "set up."
I just had some 1/18 1969 NASCAR wheels printed (for my Charger project ). 😀 😀
@chris Apparently, you're the man Paul and I need to be talking to. Can your guys reproduce something as tiny as a 1:43 scale Bentley hood ornament? The dilemma would be on which model maker's Bentley should we use as the beginning point?
"...and I admit to being a bit disappointed."
That's too bad, it could've been real standout! - It still looks pretty good though, right? 🤔 🤨
@chris Standing four or five feet away it will pass, but up close is not quite as nice. The rear opera window has a noticeable gouge in the upper part and that really detracts from the style of the model.
Can your guys reproduce something as tiny as a 1:43 scale Bentley hood ornament?
They can reproduce virtually ANYTHING in ANY SIZE provided THEY HAVE the files. Currently, I'm NOT in contact with a "file maker/code writer." Even my Ph.D. son (who does write program-code ) doesn't script SLT or 3MF files.
@gdh Occasionally, existing 3-D printers MAY have replacements parts OR something close. Here's just one printer: 1/43 Scale 3D Print Models - distefan 3d print
Google searches will undoubtably "uncover" many more. 😀
@chris This is a whole new world for me. I'll do some snooping and see what I can find.
@paul-rouffa I heard back from the seller and she offered one of two options: I ship it back (at my expense 18-20€) or she will refund fifty-percent of the cost, including shipping. The refund made better financial sense, so that was the option I selected. I put it in one of the diorama displays and that is where it will sit for eternity, nose out. While I was reattaching the hood ornament, which fell off as soon as I removed it from the box, I noticed the rear deck handle was askew by about ten degrees. I can't imagine sitting all day and gluing on these tiny bits, so I guess my 'builder' had reached his/her threshold for pain and suffering. ATC is DEFINITELY a no-buy for me, from now on.
