Christmas present to myself... -pics

Harvey's always to blame, because he showed me this new Alfa! But let me back up a moment...

The original Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale was designed by Bertone and looks to be inspired by the BAT cars. It seems that there should be more 1/43 examples out there but I have only two. Why did Minichamps or Spark not do it? This was sold from 1959 to 1963 when it was updated to Giulia specs - only a few trim pieces were changed so it is very hard to tell the difference externally. Sales stopped in 1966, with less than 3000 examples made (Fusi, 1978).

These are identical castings except one has photoetched wipers. M4 did the more detailed silver one(owner of Rio, etc). The less detailed red came out in the Alfa Romeo Collection (partworks from a while ago).

But the reason for this post is my new acquisition, from Autocult, in their Masterpiece series. Their Giulia SS Prototypo was also designed at Bertone as a replacement for the Giulietta. Alfa scrapped that idea and went with the same older BAT-style when they updated the mechanicals. What do you think? Perhaps the curved rear glass was too radical in 1965 (i.e., too expensive)?

The Prototypo is more modern looking and hints at the Montreal to come (see the door shape). But the original is classic 1950s: streamlined, rounded look.

A friend owns a 1/1 and I have a 1/18 scale model. One unique feature of the 1/1 is that the right side windshield wiper parks in a vertical position as with your silver model.

Nice present!

There are one or two features of that prototype that remind me of the Montreal

Thanks - the rear upswing of the doors, especially.
