From 1984 to 2007 Toyota made the MR2, a two-seat, mid-engine car, sometimes a sports car and sometimes a GT. It was initially powered by a 1.6L twincam 4-cylinder engine, mounted transversally, though engine size would go up, then down on successors. I have been able to obtain all three generations in diecast, and all in red!
Tomica Dandy DJ-007 is the 1st Gen 1984 car, introduced in 1985. The lower panels are painted silver and the tinted roof panels (removeable on the 1:1) are fixed on the diecast. Doors and the front and rear luggage compartments open, and also the engine cover.
Ebbro 43266 represents the 2.0L Gen 2 car, made from 1989 to 1999 (but appearing as a model year 1991 car when it showed up in the US). The only working feature on the Ebbro is the pop-up headlights but the overall shape and details show this to be a collectors' model as opposed to the earlier play-value Tomica.
For 2000 the MR2 (MR-S in Japan, MR2 Spyder in the US) went back to an open sports car layout, now with a 1.8L engine. Less than 28,000 were sold through six production years, so the MR2 was axed in 2007. Ebbro made the convertible 3rd Gen car as No. 43099. No operable features on this one, but it's an excellent replica.
Excellent pictures and commentary Harv.
