The 1966 Formula One Season

The 1966 Formula One season was the 20th season of FIA Formula One motor racing with 9 races.

The season was the first of the '3 litre formula', which saw maximum engine capacity doubled from the previous season. British constructors were forced to look elsewhere after Climax's withdrawal from racing.

Jack Brabham took his third and final Drivers' Championship, this time in a car of his own manufacture with an Australian engineered Repco V8 engine. In winning the championship in his own car, Australian Brabham became the first and the only driver to ever win the World Championship in a car carrying his own name (theBT19 and BT20 models used were designed by Brabham's business partner Ron Tauranac). Brabham won the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers.

in 1966, Jack Brabham won 4 races with John Surtees (Ferrari and Cooper Maserati) taking 2 wins.  Stewart (BRM), Jim Clark (Lotus-BRM) and Ludovico Scarliotti (Ferrari) each won 1 race.

Recognize Denny and Jack, must be too early for Bernie, second from the left reminds me of Terry-Thomas!

David - once again, compliments on this series - it would be great if others could something similar, either within a racing theme or otherwise - say a series on the Mille Miglia or Carrera Panamericana, or something like "Buicks of '55 through '65" just to name a few - many possibilities. If I had a large enough (or concentrated enough) collection, I'd do it myself! Thanks again for this terrific contribution.

At the Dutch Grand Prix, Lotus unveiled the new Ford-sponsored Coswoth DFV engine which was to be one of the outstanding racing engines of all time, winning 155 Grands Prix, Le Mans and Indianapolis. Although Jim Clark won four races, Denny Hulme took the Formula 1 Drivers Championship title by virtue of his greater consistency. Hulme became the first of two drivers to win the title without achieving a single pole position in the season.

Here's a couple of Dan Gurney's Eagles. Spark S2398 is the T1G in which Gurney won the non-championship Race of Champions.

One of my favorite F1s is the '67 Spa-winning Gurney-Weslake V12 car. The only F1 race won by an American, in an American car, with an American team. The base is signed by the late Mr. Gurney. I like how they simulated the heat-created bluing on the exhausts.

You have two really nice pieces there Garv. I would especially like that signed edition. Extra details like the blued exhaust make it especially appealing.

The 1968 Formula One Season

Although they had failed to win the title in 1967, by the end of the season the Lotus 49 and the Cosworth DFV engine were mature enough to make the Lotus team dominant again. For 1968 Lotus lost its exclusive right to use the Cosworth DFV. McLaren built a new Cosworth DFV-powered car and a new force appeared on the scene when Ken Tyrrell entered his own team using a Cosworth-powered car built by French aeronautics company Matra and driven by ex-BRM driver Jackie Stewart.

Unsurprisingly the season-opening 1968 South African Grand Prix confirmed Lotus' superiority, with Jim Clark and Graham Hill finishing 1–2.

It would be Clark's last win. On 7 April 1968 Clark, one of the most successful and popular drivers of all time, was killed at Hockenheim in West Germany at a non-championship Formula Two event.

Despite the death of Jim Clark, Lotus won the Formula 1 Constructors' Title and Graham Hill won the Formula 1 Driver’s Title in 1968 with 3 wins, but Stewart was a serious contender, winning 3 Grands Prix in the Tyrrell-run Matra MS10. Denny Hulme took 2 races for McLaren with Bruce McLaren taking the other McLaren victory. Jacky Ickx took the only Ferrari win. Jo Siffert, Clarks replacement at Lotus won the British Grand Prix.

Jo Siffert drove for Rob Walker rather than the works Lotus. It was so interesting to have Rob Walker write about each race in Road & Track.

Hi Paul,

Yes, Rob Walker differentiated his Lotus cars from the team cars by painting them blue rather than the up to this point, traditional green. Lotus was in transition with a move to Gold Leaf tobacco colours and later of course, the black and gold John Player Special colours. I bought Road and Track monthly and followed Rob Walker also. I still have many Road and Track issues.

The '68 season was not lost on French Dinky either. Here are their Matra MS 11 and Ferrari 312, excellent diecasts for the time. Solido also made Stewart's MS10 high wing car that was 1st at the German GP.

Here we are finally at the last year of  the FABULOUS 60s

The 1969 Formula One season was the 23rd season of FIA Formula One motor racing with 11 races.

Matra, which had entered Formula One the previous year, withdrew their works team from the 1969 championship and focused on their partnership with Ken Tyrrell. Jackie Stewart won the 1969 Formula 1 Driver’s Title easily with the new Matra MS80, which corrected most of the weaknesses of the MS10. Stewart's title was the first won by a French  chassis, and the only one won by a chassis built in France. It would also be the only time a constructor won in Formula One without fielding a works team.
Matra took the Formula 1 Constructors’ Title.

@david-green I was thinking that Brawn in 2009 also won the Constructor's Championship without fielding a works team, but their history is so convoluted that I'm not sure. Tyrrell sold to BAT, which became BAR until Honda dropped out, then Ross Brawn put a Mercedes engine in the car and won the championship. Then it became the Mercedes works team in 2010.

Also, since we don't start counting at zero, you could treat 1970 as the last year of the '60s. Idea
