My favourite Formula 1 eras were the 50s and 60s but certainly, the 70s were an exciting time. Formula 1 to this day keeps me interested and I cannot wait until the Bahrain race to start the 2021 season. Anyway, here is the 1970 season to start the 70s decade.

The 1970 Formula One Season

The 1970 Formula One season was the 24th season of FIA Formula One motor racing with 13 races.

Jochen Rindt Lotus 72 1970

The Drivers' Championship won by Jochen Rindt and the Constructors' title by Lotus. Rindt died four races before the end of the season, but had earned just enough World Championship points that no other driver managed to surpass his total by the end of the season. It is the only season to date in which the World Drivers' Championship title had been awarded posthumously.

Jochen Rindt died at Monza in crash due to brake failure and an Armco barrier crash.

Jochen Rindt won 5 races for Lotus. Ferrari took 4 wins, 3 for Jacky Ickx and one for Clay Ragazzoni. Jack Brabham took one victory in the Brabham with Pedro Rodriguez winning one in the BRM and Emerson Fittipaldi Rindt’s replacement winning the USGP for Lotus.

Can't agree more. I love Formula 1 races, perhaps more than any other form of auto racing. The eras you speak of were phenomenal and defined the series to a great degree.

The 1971 Formula One season was the 25th season of FIA Formula One motor racing with 11 races.

After the death of 1970 World Champion Jochen Rindt the previous year, Lotus had a weak season, with young and inexperienced drivers such as Emerson Fittipaldi appearing in the cars. The team spent a lot of time experimenting with a gas turbine a powered car, and with four wheel drive again. Tyrrell won 7 times with BRM  and Ferrari each winning twice.

Using their own chassis heavily inspired by the Matra MS80 but with conventional tanks, Terrell and Jackie Stewart easily took success in 1971. Of the eleven World Championship races, Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, Jo Siffert, Peter Gethin and Francois Cevert won one race each, while Stewart won the other six races.

Jackie Stewart won the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and Tyrrell became the Formula 1 Constructors’ Champion.

For 1972 Team Lotus focused again on the type 72 chassis. Imperial Tobacco continued its sponsorship of the team under its new John Player Special brand. The cars, now often referred to as 'JPS', were fielded in a new black and gold livery. Lotus took the championship by surprise in 1972 with 25-year-old Brazilian driver Emerson Fittipaldi who became the youngest world champion at that point. Stewart came second in the championship.

Emerson Fittipaldi in the Lotus 72 won 5 races with Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell winning 4. Jean-Pierre Beltois took BRMs final Formula 1 victory at Monaco and Denny Hulme for McLaren and Jacky Ickx for Ferrari took one win each.

Emerson Fittipaldi won the 1972 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and Colin Chapman's Lotus took the Constructors’ Championship.

The 1973 Formula One season was the 27th season of FIA Formula One motor racing with 15 races.

The World Championship of Drivers was won by Jackie Stewart, driving for Elf Team Tyrrell, and the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers by John Player Team Lotus. In the World Championship, Lotus teammates Emerson Fittipaldi and Ronnie Peterson raced each other while Stewart was supported at Tyrrell by François Cevert

Jackie Stewart, Tyrrell 006, World Champion by Minichamps

Stewart took the Drivers' title at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, but then at the final race of the season, the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, Cevert crashed during Saturday practice in the notorious 'Esses' and was killed instantly. Stewart and Tyrrell withdrew from the race, handing the Manufacturers' title to Lotus.

Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell 005 won 5 races while  Emerson Fittipaldi won 3 races and Ronnie Peterson won 4, both in Lotus 72. Peter Revson took two and Denny Hulme took one in the McLaren M19 and 23.

By the end of the 1973 season the best car on the track was probably the new McLaren M23, a wedge-shaped car following the same concept as the Lotus 72.

The 1973 season saw the intervention of a Safety Car in Formula One for the first time, in the form of a Porsche 914 at the Canadian Grand Prix
There would not be a full time safety car for another until 1993.

Here are a couple more additions for 1973

Peter Jeffrey Revson was an American race car driver and heir to the Revlon cosmetics fortune. He was a two-time Formula One race winner.

During Revson's first year with McLaren during the 1972 season at the age of 33, Revson was able to finish 5th in the championship standing. Running 9 out of the 12 races, Revson finished on the podium four times with three third place finishes and a second place finish. Greater success was soon to follow for Revson. The following season Revson secured his only two wins during his short formula one career. Driving a McLaren M23, Revson first tasted victory during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and later the Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park. Despite his growing successes as a driver, he was let go be McLaren at the end of the 1973 season. Revson soon signed with the rather new Shadow formula 1 team for the 1974 season.
Revson was killed during a test session on 22 March 1974, before the 1974 South African Grand Prix in Kyalami. While driving the Shadow DN3, he suffered a front suspension failure and crashed heavily into the Armco barrier.

Albert François Cevert Goldenberg was a French racing driver who took part in the Formula One World Championship. He competed in 47 World Championship Grands Prix, achieving one win, 13 podium finishes and 89 career points.

In 1973, the Tyrrell team was back on top in Formula One and Cevert showed he was capable of running with Stewart at almost every race. He finished second six times, three times behind Stewart, who acknowledged that at times the Frenchman had been a very "obedient" teammate. As Cevert began to draw even with Stewart's driving abilities, the Scot was secretly planning to retire after the last race of the season in the United States. For the 1974 season, Cevert would be Tyrrell's team leader.
At Watkins Glen, with Stewart having already clinched his third World Championship, Cevert was killed during Saturday morning qualifying, while battling for pole position with Ronnie Peterson
