I asked today how things were. Here is his answer, unedited:
We are in danger. And we are alone. We are fighting for our country and the Russians do not like it very much. Today they started shelling houses, kindergartens and so on .......... to intimidate us, because they do not intimidate our army. we destroy them in columns. In two days:
up to 90 tanks, more than 500 armored personnel carriers, more than 1,000 vehicles, up to 3,000 Russians killed, 10 aircraft, 7 helicopters. And it's two days. Half-sanctions against the Russians to assholes. The Budapest Memorandum in Ukraine, abandoned by the United States, Great Britain and Russia, renounced its nuclear potential, which is not worth the paper.
After us there will be Finns, Poles, Romanians ............. read the history. The resolution of all disputes was moved in Europe from Yugoslavia to Ukraine - this was clear in 2008. It is enough to flirt and negotiate with them. This is a horde, they must be driven back and not released from there, because they are wild beasts. If you want to help us, demand concrete action from your congressmen, senators, and president. Now we are helping our army, we are on duty at night, we are buying what we need for our army. We work and fight. Sorry if the text is very harsh and emotional. We have an enemy on the threshold!
BTW, his website is still working. Only 4 days ago he e-mailed me about a new M-B model for sale.
This is truly horrid and historic. All the resistors are heroes.

Very sad. I can understand Vlad's feeling of anger, and being deserted and basically left out to dry. Putin is playing a harsh game and seemingly uncaring about Ukrainian or Russian casualties. Vlad's figures of Russian casualties seems optimistic and the situation in Kyiv looks very grave right now. All the treaties from 1990 onward have come to nothing. NATO obviously has decided to stand back but reinforce their eastern border nations. Echos of 1937 with hopefully a better outcome.
Invading is one thing but maintaining control is another. I don't see the Ukrainian people sitting quietly to occupation. I wish Vlad and all Ukrainians the very best possible outcome.
The ghost of Neville Chamberlain seems to rise in Europe. And that was engendered by a lack of action previously in the Rhineland. And finally a certain Russian-German pact virtually ensured that death would delight over the next years.
The Ukraine now....then who is next.....Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia....etc.? Get those sanctions going asap and hammer them!
I don't know what the solution is. Sanctions don't work, firing on Russians starts WW3. Some polititians have called Putin a genius, but they got it slighty wrong - evil genius.
@mikedetorrice
Mike, you are correct. I have done a lot of reading about World War 2, including what led up to it in Europe and Asia. The parallels with the 1930s are too similar. What I would like to see happen to Russia and Putin would not be appropriate for this forum.

I think we should stop talking politics, guys !
That is for other fora.
It's not politics, Joop. It's the lives of the forum members.
For all members that bought models from Alex B. (the EMC Eldorado was the model he had commissioned), please add him to your prayers. He is in Ukraine now.

And the life of thousands of Ukrainians. And the security of Europe and ultimately the world. I am uplifted by the resiliency and the spirit of the Ukrainian people, as well as the unity in the US and Europe against Putin. Unfortunately, things will get much worse before they get better.
Having visited Kiev in 2008, I have great sadness for their people in this war. But my further concern is as other devilish dictators take note of Putin's expansionist take over will that embolden other totalitarian states to consider, or do the same? Consider Xi Jinping and Taiwan. Imagine trade sanctions on China and the impact on this hobby with the exception of Brooklin and a few others. Trade sanctions on China, if they even could be implemented, would have much greater impact on the USA than sanctions on Russia.

It's no coincidence that China is upping its show of aggression towards Taiwan is it? A perfect time for them to commence their hostile takeover while the world is busy watching Russia.
I have felt for many years, as I'm sure many others have, that having our manufacturing done in foreign countries (China in particular obviously) was going to ultimately be a grave error. Closing our domestic manufacturing, costing thousands of jobs, eventual loss of related skills, etc. in the mad race to offer ever cheaper consumer products ultimately gives a great deal of power to countries like China, who through such manufacturing practices, start to gain control over our economy. It's a very simplistic statement I know, but it is pretty basic economics. When they can control the supply of goods to North America, what is the first thing they will do if or when they want to take over our countries in North America?
OK, gents. You have all handled this dialogue very well. Thank you for keeping it civil and enlightening. But, before it begins to deteriorate, can we all agree that we are concerned for our friends and members who are impacted by this dire situation and move on? The forums have always been a safe place to share our hobby and a bit of an oasis in our day.
