I think the similar red color hides the differences, but I am surprised that the designs did not change that much in 5 years. A nice looking pair! 😎Â
It would appear that the '78 grew a tad bigger with longer overhangs both front & rear. Probably bumped the weight up some whilst decreasing MPG. Â
I gave some thought to buying American for my 1st new car in Nov.'77.....just a few thoughts. Not impressed with anything out there. Found a '78 Scirocco Champagne Edition brand new on showroom floor, wrote a deposit ck and picked it up next day.Â
They were nice looking cars then and still are today, but they were pigs. Gas-guzzling and under-powered. I never owned a Cadillac from this era but had three Lincoln Marks. They were the same, comfortable and rode nice, but they usually couldn't get out of their own way. I appreciate them now, but they weren't practical at the time. I'm not familiar with the Volkswagen, but I bet it was fun car to drive.

In the mid '70s - late 80's my best friend was a body shop manager for a huge Lincoln, Mercury, Pantera, Capri dealership in Costa Mesa CAÂ
Used to stop in to visit quite a bit. Larry sometimes had to take a car home to drive / make sure everything was working ok.
I remember all those fancy Mark Editions too.
There was givenchy Bill blass I guess I'm forgetting some of them now Emilio pucci or is that a different car maker...lolÂ
The edition name appeared in the oval opera glass. Those Mark's where HUGE !
If I remember correctly, there were four Designer Series models offered, Cartier, Bill Blass, Pucci & Givenchy. They had special badging and distinctive colors. I never had any of the Designer Series cars, although I came very close to buying a '76 Givenchy series car about 10 or so years ago. It needed more work than I was willing to do, so I passed.
As for the Lincolns of that period, I remember them very well because I have been raised in front of a Lincoln/Mercury dealer. I have seen the "big" Continentals coming for service. Every new model year was quite a show with celebrities sometimes coming for opening night driving Jaguars and other exotics.
Thanks John, I remember those ! They were big, bold and elegantly styled. A pretty much more handsomely styled luxury car than the competition from Cadillac. The Mark would / could never be a car I'd own... it's just not my style. But they sure are a TKO stylewise !
@100ford2003 A pic for you Steve - my Schuco VW Scirrocco. I had a VW GTI bought new in '83 for its performance, but I always liked the look of the 1st Gen Sciroccos.

I had a used '76 first. Loved it. Then the Alpine White w/ black out trim '78 in Nov. '77. It had recaro style seats, a large front airdam, driving lights, and the new style wrap around bumpers. The dealer had put on wide, meaty 50series tires which lowered the car and it just looked soooo good. I lusted after it that evening !
