Here we go again - 75 years ago today.
A second atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, this time on Nagasaki, a secondary target from the initial chosen military one. Known as "Fat Man" this bomb used plutonium as the fissile material and spherically placed charges for detonation. Once again, Brumm made a model of "Fat Man" in 1:43, but without the tar covering placed on the outside for the actual bombing run. See my August 6 post for the Hiroshima details.

Three days ago I posted by autographed photo of the Enola Gay. The photo was also signed by Charles Sweeney, pilot of Bock's Car (or Bockscar) and his B-29 can be seen in the background on Tinian Island.

Six days later Japan surrendered, bereft of the knowledge that those were the only two bombs we had at the time. Just as well, for a war-weary world. The reaction of those in Oak Ridge is obvious:

Some years back I got to hear a talk at the
Chicago Club by one of the co-pilots for the "Bockscar" silverplate B-29 on the Nagasaki mission.
During the question and answer period after, I got a chance to personally thank him on behalf of myself and my family for completing the tough mission and perhaps saving the life of my Dad, who likely would have involved in the upcoming invasions of the Japanese home islands, and many, many others. Operation Downfall (Olympic/Coronet), the planned invasions, would quite probably have led to casualties numbering into the millions for all sides involved ...... maybe multiple millions of Japanese and even up to a million Allied injuries/deaths.

I think I see a Cessna 172 in the last pic. Did my first solo flight in one of those.

That B-29 is still an imposing sight !
