...that appears to be from me asking for discrete and urgent contact; it's not. My only email address is my name at gmail. I have not been hacked, and neither have you. These emails and friend requests come from sophisticated software that spoofs the sender's name and goes out to any social media contacts they may have. All this contact info is available online in one form or another. 

So, I will never ask you for gift cards, money, or your credit card. You should never respond to vague requests or cryptic messages, Geoff Jowett did the smart thing and asked for verification independent of the suspicious email.

I get so many spoofs cluttering my inbox and spam folder that it's unreal. Fortunately, my email discloses the actual email address of the sender, leading to prompt deletion. And watch out for clones on Facebook too. If you get a friend request from someone already your friend, beware.
