Marian Gradus makes some excellent points on model collecting. Unfortunately, I followed the same path that he took in collecting far too much in too wide a range. If I was starting out again, I would be more selective. Marian has a wonderful collection, none the less.

Thanks for this Mark.

David I agree with you. If I were starting to collect today my focus would be much narrower than this over whelming collection I have today.

Great article!  Thanks for sharing it.  I liked everything he said except the part about not liking sportscars 😥 and "age-related shrinkage" of the modern resin stuff.  What is that?  Not the banana effect, that has been mentioned here many times?

Sports cars are a major part of my collection and have been a constant feature of my driving life. Having none in my collection would be a travesty. Each to their own, I guess.

@karl, I've heard that accusation before. But, I have several resin cars over 15 years old and have yet to see one with any problems like that.

My oldest Spark and Bizarre are 20 years old now (were they all resin back then?); the other makers are are closer to 10.  I'll have to take the oldest ones out the box and see! 2005:

@karl

I also never heard the term age related shrinkage for resin models. I have some resin building kits for my model train layout, some built, some still in original boxes. They are about 25 years old. No problems with them.

I wonder if perhaps not having the resin models in a fairly consistent temperature might cause some warping over time??

I've never heard of that type of warpage. I have to wonder if the author is thinking of promos or plastic models.

@jkuvakas John I believe the criticism of resin being banana shaped was on new models. Like you, I have never had a resin model become that way afterwards. I must be extremely lucky as many of the complaints that were being made did not exist with my models.

@bob-jackman   You are right - I was teasing a bit about the banana, because I have had no bad experience with warpage with older resin models... Luckily!

I think I have some age-related shrinkage, but it's best not to talk about it.....

Oh no, you really need to be up front about these things.
