A while ago I was reading about the Cugnot steam tractor of 1769, which some say was the first self-propelled vehicle. Subsequently, I found that Brumm had once made a model of this steam tractor in 1/43 scale, so of course I became interested. I have found a few on the secondary market with a wide variety of prices that start high and include rather high mailing fees. While I'm still interested, I would value some views on the Brumm treatment of this old curiosity. I think it was part of an Old Fire series, and I think it is the subject of this picture I found on the web. Thanks in advance. David H
Make sure you get the later one - in a plastic box. Early models came inside a soft plastic insert and many didn't survive shipping.
David:
You may be aware that the "Cugnot" Steam Tractor is the symbol, or "logo." if you will, of the Society of Automotive Historians. As a past director of the Society I encountered these "Brumm" models on vendors website, and bought a number of them for my fellow Board of Directors. As I remember at the time they were 'pricy'
I can't vouch for the accuracy of the model, (who can)? but it hit so close to home that we had to have them. Alan Cerf, has a museum near Sarasota, FL and has built a re-creation of the original steam tractor which I have seen, and I believe actually runs.
Thank you for your information and ideas, Stanton. I'm going to look into your society; it sounds interesting. David
